Tartar Removal
Methods for removing tartar and plaque
Professional oral hygiene is carried out by a dentist and means the removal of tartar and plaque, as well as polishing the surface of the teeth using special methods.
In his practice, a dentist uses several methods for professional oral hygiene:
- Removal of soft plaque and polishing of tooth surfaces with rubber cups for polishing and special pastes.
- Removal of tartar with the help of ultrasonic or sound devices.
- Removal of heavily pigmented plaque (as a result of smoking, drinking coffee, tea, etc) using the Air-Flow device.
Depending on the clinical situation, one of these techniques or a combination of them may be used.
Use of polishing brushes and special pastes
Removal of plaque and polishing of tooth surfaces with the help of polishing brushes and special pastes is recommended for:
- children under 18
- adults without existing tartar and gum disease (gingivitis, periodontitis)
Removal of dental deposits is carried out from all surfaces of the teeth of the upper and lower jaws, which are located above the gum.
It is done using special brushes and pastes. In our clinic, we use special soft rubber cups for polishing pastes to prevent gum injury and Proxy polishing paste from the German company Ivoclar Vivadent.
Ultrasonic scaling procedure
Removal of tartar with the help of ultrasonic or sound devices is recommended to be carried out for:
- adults with existing tartar
- adults with gum disease (gingivitis, periodontitis)
Removal of dental deposits is carried out from all surfaces of the teeth of the upper and lower jaws, which are located above the gum. It is produced with the help of special ultrasonic and sound devices.
At QRD Dental we use a modern Cavitron Select SPS 230B ultrasonic magnetostrictive device with a tank from the American company Dentsply Sirona, which has various application modes for the most effective and non-traumatic removal of mineralized dental plaque.
This method of removing plaque is often combined with the use of a rubber cup and polishing paste or with an Air-Flow device.
The use of the Air-Flow device
The use of the Air-Flow device is recommended for adults to remove highly pigmented plaque (as a result of smoking, drinking coffee, tea, etc.)
Removal of highly pigmented plaque is performed from all surfaces of the teeth of the upper and lower jaws, which are located above the gum using the Air-Flow device.
We use the modern Prophyflex 3 device from KAVO and the most modern powders for the device in our clinic, including those based on glycine and erythritol. With the help of them, a careful and high-quality removal of pigmented dental deposits and polishing of the surface of the teeth is carried out.
